Case study: NaiL

From one automation to $12.2M in signed contracts

NaiL sells AI phone assistants to home service franchises. George had a first version, a growing client list, and no technical cofounder.

For six months, Zach was NaiL’s fractional CTO. We kept client systems live and built the platform NaiL sells today, while George focused on sales. It now answers about 2,000 calls a week.

Caller details are blurred for privacy.

  • AI receptionist

Answers every call, qualifies the job, checks the address against the service area, and books it straight into the client’s CRM.

  • Client dashboard

Every call with its recording and transcript, booking analytics for each location, and support tickets in one place.

  • Support operations

Client tickets flow into Asana, AI agents triage them, and engineering work lands in Linear, so nothing waits on a person to sort it.

  • Appointment routing

Fits each new booking around the appointments already on the calendar, using real drive times between their addresses.

Deep dive: NaiL’s address verification

We go deep on your business’s problems

Getting the address right over the phone is essential. The booking depends on it, and so does everything downstream, like routing. But phone audio garbles street names.

So we built a phonetic index of every street in the US from Census data. Tested on real calls, it beat searching the Google Maps API directly.

Custom-built tech like this becomes a moat for your business.

Your whole tech department

Everything technical, owned by your CTO

AI can code, but at your scale, you need someone to take ownership.

  • Roadmap and decisions

Every technical call, including when to say no.

  • New features

What your clients ask for, shipped every week.

  • Uptime and fixes

Monitoring on everything, and fixes for every client.

  • Security and backups

Backups, logins, and who has access to what.

  • Vendors and infrastructure

Your tools, hosting, and what they cost.

  • Engineers as you grow

Added to our team, so you never hire or manage one.

FAQ

Questions before you hand it off

Why wouldn’t I just build it with AI?

AI is great at writing code. But anyone who’s built with it knows you still spend all day at the helm: prompting, checking its work, and fixing what it breaks. That’s not where a founder’s time should go. We take the helm, so you can focus on growth.

Why not just hire a developer?

A developer can look cheaper, but they build what you tell them to, and you still have to manage them. A CTO thinks ahead about what to improve, what to build next, and what could break, so technical leadership stops being your job. And as your product grows, we add engineers to our team. You get a whole team, sped up by AI, instead of one hire you’re responsible for.

My product was built with AI or by a freelancer. Is that a problem?

That’s where most founders start. We keep what works, fix what’s fragile, and build from there instead of starting over.

How do you handle security?

It’s part of the job from day one. We sweep who has access to what, move passwords and API keys into encrypted storage, set up backups, and give every person and integration only the access it needs. When someone leaves, their access goes the same day.

How do you charge?

It depends on the product and how fast you want to move. Some founders pay a monthly fee, and some pay partly from the product’s profit. We’ll work it out on the call.

What if it isn’t working?

Every engagement starts as a six-month trial. Either side can step away with 30 days’ notice, and everything we built stays with you.

Who owns what you build?

You do. The code, accounts, and infrastructure are in your company’s name from day one.
